Bruce Johnston wrote “I write the songs” about Brian Wilson, leader of the Beach Boys. Wilson didn't want to tour, and so Johnston took the place of Glenn Campbell (who took the place of Brian Wilson) and filled in as a member of The Beach Boys, at least on tour. Johnsron got his start singing and producing in LA, and had a million seller hit with a group called the Rip Chords, best known for the hot rod hit “Hey Little Cobra.” Manilow wrote piles of hits songs, and even commercials like the State Farm insurance ditty, “And like a good neighbor State Farm is there….”.
But he didn't write “I write the songs.”
