*** Rock ‘n roll trivia:

This group, originally formed to raise funds to support the Tottenham Hotspurs (Spurs) Football Club in London, was the first “British Invasion” band to tour the U.S., and had more appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show than any other U.K. group.

(Answer? The answer is posted now on the JOTW webpage. Visit www.nedsjotw.com. Read previous questions and answers at http://www.nedsjotw.com/blog/JOTWRocknRollTriviaQuiz.)

*** Last week’s Rock n’ Roll trivia contest:

Boston's WBCN-FM was a pioneer in alternative “Underground Radio” music format, going all the way back to 1969. Charles Laquidara was a WBCN personality with his morning show, The Big Mattress, on the air in the Boston market from 1969–1995, and is featured as one of the influential radio personalities at the Rock and Roll Hall of fame. Laquidara was hired at WBCN to replace a DJ who left the station to join an up-and-coming band in the Boston music scene that achieved considerable success. Who was the DJ and what band was he the frontman for? (Bonus: The DJ/singer had a hot wife. Who was she?)

Beth King’s guess:

Howard Stern? Lord only know Imis's wife isn't hot!

(No. But Howard Stern did break into radio on WBUR, a campus radio station at Boston University. My friend, Bob Petrick, tells the story that he and Stern were goofing around on the air, the boss heard them, and call the station to fire them both on the air. That was the first time Stern was fired, but not the last.)

That was a wild guess. Howard Stern is such a blow hard!

(I wouldn't know. I haven't listened to him in years. I don't listen to Imus, either. he's an even bigger blow hard.

Maybe I should get fired on the air, and then I would be famous, too. What can I say to offend you?)

From Woody Goulart:

I fondly remember listening to Charles Laquidara from 1982 to 1990 when I lived and worked in the metro Boston area. He taught me the value of using the Yiddish word mishegas in my everyday vocabulary.

(Actually, my favorite WBCN show was Little Walter’s Time Machine (http://littlewalter.com/). I was into 50s R&B and Doo Wop and amazed at how many records were produced that never were mainstream.)

From Philip Raskin:

Has to be Peter Wolf, who went on to join John “J.” Geils' eponymous band, followed by a solo career and then apparently hanging out in Boston Public Gardens in a black t-shirt and a beret in 2007 according to my friend Erin who saw him. Lights out. Uh-huh. Blast, blast, blast.

From Mark O’Toole:

I gotta think it was Peter Wolf. As for the wife, don't know.

From Steve Valley:

Good one. I grew up listening to Chuck and saw the J. Geils Band at the old Cape Cod Coliseum. Peter Wolf had the crowd in his hands as soon as he took the stage. Can't believe he snared Faye Dunaway as a wife.

(I remember shows at the cape Cod Coliseum, which was also the venue for the Cape Cod Cubs and the Cape Codders hockey teams. I remember seeing James Montgomery Blues band open for Chuck berry there, or hanging out outside because we couldn’t afford tickets for Uriah Heep. Now it’s a warehouse for the Christmas Shoppes.)

*** From Captain Jack:

How about those Somali pirates. You first brought attention to the Job of the Week readers about the Gulf of Malacca pirates a couple of years ago.

(Yes. And I warned the world about the impact of the ice diminished Arctic, too.)

*** Mark Sofman on piracy:

This supertanker hijacking is astounding.

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hIeRGWIXYOEk6St2Y2VK7UkXIPGgD94HBJP80

(The 1,080-foot, 300,000-ton very large crude carrier (VLCC) MV Sirius Star oil tanker, owned by Saudi Aramco subsidiary Vela International Marine, and able to carry about 2,000,000 barrels of petroleum, was captured by Somali pirates on November 15, 2008, 450 nautical miles southeast of the coast of Kenya — the farthest out to sea yet for a Somali piracy incident., and becoming the largest ship to date to be captured through piracy in any form.

Who is going to stop them? Being a pirate is the best job in Somalia.)

Good question and a statement of fact. That Somalia is a “failed state” is, hmmm, a bit of an understatement. But does the civilized world go in under force of arms and impose “civilization” – the rule of law, etc.? Given all the other ongoing miseries in other parts of the world, I don' t know that there's much stomach for such among the US political leadership, the West in general, or even the UN (this last is probably a laughable suggestion).

Couple of other things: as bad as the economy and the business outlook may be, I find myself thankful to live in the US of A. At the same time, it's a wonder how much sh*t's going down in the world that most Americans have no idea about – so much so that they haven't a clue how lucky they are.

This may or may not have made a lot of sense – I'm not yet fully caffeinated this morning.

(1. After what happened in 1991, there's no way we'll go back into Somalia.

2. Just about everything that goes on in the world is beyond the average American’s normal perception.)

Hi, Ned.

Is the item below something you'd be willing to post in JOTW? If so, I'd be grateful!

Seeking Those in Mid-Life Transition

Are you going through a transition in your life–and are you willing to share your story? If so, I'd love to hear it.

As part of a client project, I'm compiling stories of people in their 40s, 50s and 60s who are going through transitions of all kinds; the transition can be sparked by internal choices, such as a career change, or outside forces, such as a job loss or health issues. I'm looking for folks who are on a quest to respond to these transitions in a positive manner, who are re-assessing their personal goals and dreams, taking calculated risks and weathering setbacks to become “their best selves.”

If this sounds like you – or if you know someone else who fits the bill – please contact me, and I'll tell you more about the project. Thanks so much!

*** From C. Blake Powers:

Ned,

Thanksgiving marks the end of the annual fundraiser for Project Valour-IT (http://soldiersangels.org/index.php?page=project-valour-it) Sad to say, we are way behind our goal for this worthwhile endeavor that supplies voice-activated/adaptive laptops and other technology to our wounded and disabled troops. The fundraiser (http://soldiersangels.org/index.php?page=fundraiser) includes an all-in-good-fun competition between the services — the money raised all goes to the Valour-IT fund which is spent ONLY on the technology — and this year there is even a charity auction (http://tinyurl.com/5dg84d) that features signed books from authors including David Weber, Dean Ing, David Drake, John Ringo, David J. Williams, Travis “Doc” Taylor, and Mark L. Van Name.

If you would be so kind, please help us spread the word and see if we might not yet be able to make our goal. I know things are tight for many, but if every reader of JOTW would donate just one dollar to the general fund, http://soldiersangels.org/index.php?page=fundraiser we would be well on our way to meeting our goal. Via the auction, people can give and get someone a nice holiday gift as well. One of the most humbling experiences of my life was being asked to present some of the laptops on my way home from my first embed in Iraq; and, some of the most rewarding was hearing how much they had meant and help from recipients. This is a way to say thanks to those that have paid the price of service in a lasting, tangible, and meaningful way. Please do so today.

Thanks!

Blake
