*** Rock ‘n roll trivia:
When the lead singer for this band died, the band members thought he was irreplaceable. Out of nowhere came a guy who sounded just like the former lead singer, but who had no experience in performing. “The biggest crowd he had ever performed in front of was forty people at a karaoke bar in a bowling alley.” With their new lead singer, this band still performs. The group's founder and creative genius had been a senior product engineer with Polaroid when he laid down the original demo tracks mostly by himself at his home. Their first album, released in 1976, went on to be the biggest selling debut album by any artist up to that time.

*** An excerpt from Ray Jones’ acceptance speech upon receiving the PRSA Infinity Award:
I met Ned Lundquist earlier this year. Ned is active on the national PR speaking circuit, and is considered a guru on the topic of networking.
He made two points that are worth sharing, because they speak to the heart and soul of public relations.
The first is that taking time to help your colleagues is the dues you pay for being a member of the profession. With Ned this is an absolute mantra. So I’ll repeat it, in mantra-like fashion: “Taking time to help your colleagues is the dues you pay for being a member of the profession.”
The second law of networking is what Ned calls “The Law of Unintended Positive Consequences.”
This can be explained as follows: “When you have a chance to do something for somebody else, do it, no questions asked, and expect nothing in return.” When you operate in this mode – where the question is always How can I give? … not … How can I get? – there is an ironic turn of events. Ultimately, you are the one who benefits, often in ways that you never could imagine.
This has been my personal experience 100%.
I do not believe that I am receiving this award because I am a good networker. But I do believe that I am a much better practitioner because I work hard at networking.
Whenever someone hands me an assignment, they are not just handing it to me….they are, in effect, handing it to me and my entire network. The network gives me a tremendous advantage in problem-solving.
And when I do need to look outside for help, which happens embarrassingly often, I get a chance to interact with people like you. So it’s a win-win.

I am posting this listing on behalf of a colleague, Lynn Tierney. She is currently the Assistant Administrator at the FAA for Communications (I'm at the NTSB, so we have worked together on various aviation issues), but on February 1st she starts a new position as VP of Communications for the entire University of California system.
She is looking for a Director of Media Relations ASAP. It was previously advertised and despite receiving nearly 100 applications, most of the applicants did not have sufficient depth of experience for the position (so if you applied in the past, no need to apply again). It has been reopened, but will close on 1/22/09. The salary range is from $106K-$173K, so especially in this tight economy, it's probably worth a look! It's at www.ucop.edu under Jobs. There will be a board of interviewers, but Lynn will make the ultimate hiring decision and the position will report directly to her.
Best of luck to anyone interested – and to any of you who are out there looking in general. And if anyone is looking for a public affairs job in the federal government, please feel free to contact me if you would like to talk about the process, need someone to look at your KSAs, etc. I'm always happy to help fellow JOTW'ers!
