Position Summary

The Marketing Coordinator assists in developing and implementing NESS’s Strategic Marketing Plan,

including coordinating print and digital marketing communications, advertising, and public relations. In

addition to coordinating documentation of NESS’s programs, stories, and events, this position works

with Program Directors to develop year round programming. The Marketing Coordinator reports to the

Director of Marketing.

 

Duties and responsibilities

– Implement activities to manage and enhance NESS’s brand, image, and messages across all

constituents

– Develop and maintain NESS’s calendar and communications plan, including

o Events

o Communications schedule

o Online calendar posts

– Manage website

o Update as required

o Schedule/manage/delegate blog posts

o Coordinate with website designer/administrator

– Manage social media posts and updates

– Coordinate and implement advertising; develop plan and budget

– Coordinate and implement public relations activities and events, representing NESS as needed

(open houses, camp fairs, press conferences, etc.)

– Coordinate and implement marketing communications, including print, digital, and broadcast

media, coordinating with outside designers as needed

Minimum Requirements:

Purpose : The Multimedia Communicator will join the Department of Communication’s Institutional Positioning team to promote the University of Michigan Health System’s clinical care, research, news and innovative education and approaches to the world. The communicator promotes the Health System through social media, storytelling, videos, blog writing and pitching to traditional media and digital media such as bloggers. The communicator also provides communications counsel and support to the Health System’s many departments. The communicator participates in special events, constituent outreach and develops communication strategies for clients. Successful candidates will provide excellent written and verbal communication skills, adaptability, quick thinking, enthusiasm and creativity to UMHS communication vehicles.

 

Responsibilities*

*Developing, researching and writing stories, blog posts, op-eds and news announcements for distribution directly to the public, social media audiences and to news media.

*Promoting the UMHS brand to local, regional, national and global audiences.

*Develop content for social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Pinterest to share stories about Health System clinical care, research and educational efforts that build and spread engagement with patients, families and others seeking expert and authoritative health information.

*Translating often technical topics into easy-to-grasp communications that can be understood by many audiences.

*Writing blog posts, news releases, stories for U-M publications, quickly and accurately.

*Identifying and working with team members or vendors to develop infographics to accompany stories when necessary.

*Developing in-depth knowledge of certain areas of the Health System and serving as a communication coordinator for specific departments or efforts.

*Responding quickly to inquiries from reporters, locating expert sources and arranging interviews.

*Training and preparing faculty and staff for media interviews.

*Consistently pitch and place stories in Health System priority areas to multiple media outlets. Build relationships with local, regional, national and global reporters.

*Arrange, plan and direct visits of media, photographers, TV crews, including accompanying them in all Health System facilities, protecting patient privacy.

*Work closely with Department of Communication Digital Arts team to plan and create videos or podcasts.

*Work with marketing, Web, internal communication colleagues to achieve optimal communications results.

*Track and distribute results and metrics of communications efforts to key internal audiences.

*Take part in after-hours on-call rotation.

*Work to be performed on site at the Department of Communication and/or Health System properties.

 

Division of Responsibilities

 

Develops, writes, edits content:

 

Works with department leadership, faculty and staff to identify stories that promote priority areas for the Health System. Write news announcements, press releases, blog posts, social media postings, articles for publications, op-eds and other content. Plan, create or work with vendors on videos, infographics.

 

Use social/digital media:

 

Plan and develop content for social media sites including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Instagram, in consultation with Department of Communication leadership. Post links to content on social media. Work with vendors and staff on graphic design and infographics.

 

Teamwork:

 

Promote team-building and share digital best practices/learnings with other Department of Communication team members. Work closely with the other Department of Communication staff to support community outreach activities and event marketing when necessary. Participate in after hours on-call and work with the Director of Institutional Positioning on crisis communication on beats.

 

Pitch stories to multiple media outlets:

 

Identify, develop and consistently pitch stories to traditional media and influential bloggers and writers. Write and pitch op-ed stories. Build relationships with media, both through traditional news outlets and blogs or social media.

 

Track metrics/results, engage in strategy:

 

Report and track hits for content. Provide analytics to clients. Create a communication plan for priority beat areas.

Required Qualifications*

Minimum of an undergraduate degree in marketing, communication, public relations, strategic communication, journalism or business communication required. Advanced degree preferred. Three to five years professional experience in communications in a professional setting such as a public relations/communications, news outlet, advertising or marketing agency. Experience with brand management, issues management, public relations or journalism is a plus. Must be comfortable in a multi-layered organization with complex reporting relationships. Proven experience generating client satisfaction. Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with solid understanding of social media is a must. Direct experience in a health care and/or academic medical center preferred.

 

Desired Qualifications*

Fluency in languages in addition to English.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

 

Education and/or Experience:  Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and attendance at a two week formal training school is required.

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:  Possession of a valid and appropriate driver’s license. Ability to be certified as a Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and National Criminal Information Center (NCIC) operator and Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Communications Specialist.  Ability to obtain certification in CPR and Priority Dispatch Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) within two (2) years. Successful completion of position release tests and on the job training program within twelve (12) months. Must maintain 8 hours of yearly Continuing Education Hours specific to Communications.

 

Language Skills:  Ability to read and comprehend.  Ability to speak and communicate effectively using correct English.

 

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  Some knowledge of the methods of operating the communication systems.  Some knowledge of radio terminology system and teletype procedures.  Some knowledge of the geography of the City and County and location of major landmarks.  Ability to operate all communication consoles and computer terminals. Ability to communicate with coworkers and the public under stressful conditions.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

 

Required Physical Activities:  Requires light physical effort working almost exclusively with light weight materials (up to 25 pounds) including but no limited to walking, talking stooping, kneeling, light lifting, bending, reaching and gripping. Ability to touch-type at a reasonable rate of speed, with accuracy being essential.  Ability to speak distinctly.  Ability to hear.

 

Vision Requirements:  Minimum standards as required by the Division of Motor Vehicles.

Position Description

The Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments encourages applications to fill the newly created position of Director for External Affairs. Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, the Director of External Affairs will be a member of the CSBA Senior Staff and play a central role in the management of CSBA’s relations with external stakeholders, including the media, Department of Defense, Congress, international allies, academic institutions and defense industry. The CSBA Director of External Affairs will orchestrate CSBA’s external affairs aimed at informing the American debate on the future of its national defense and the budgetary choices facing the nation. This position combines the functions of: external relations; communications strategist; website administrator; social media manager; press secretary; events manager; legislative liaison; tracking public education results; and development officer.

 

External Relations/Legislative Liason

  • Cultivate and maintain a network of relationships with government officials, military officers, sponsors, stakeholders, and media through a range of engagement opportunities from one-on-one meetings to high-level events.
  • Conceptualize and provide relevant and well-thought out external affairs strategies, ideas and opportunities, and be able to clearly present them to management team and other stakeholders.
  • Draft outreach plans for CSBA studies
  • Plan and host press briefings, congressional conferences and other events
  • Identify and recruit members of Congress as sponsors for congressional events
  • Serve as point of contact with Congress in preparation for testimonies by CSBA staff
  • Coordinate testimony follow-up, such as submission for Question for Record (QFR)
  • Track legislative process, leadership, committee membership, and staff changes
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration with other organizations in order to maximize the impact of CSBA’s message and leverage joint resources
  • Monitor media coverage of studies and events
  • Sustain interest in CSBA work by tying it to current developments in policy and news cycles
  • Draft reports for sponsors on results of outreach and educational activities related to sponsored studies
  • Manage non-commercial use copyright releases for CSBA publications by other organizations
  • Collect and analyze information on CSBA’s competitive environment and potential sponsors

 

Communications

  • Handle media inquiries, prioritize and triage requests, and identify appropriate CSBA staff to respond to inquiries
  • Cultivate working relationships with reporters and editors; stay informed on their priorities in order to identify opportunities to pitch CSBA’s past and future projects and studies, and to increase the media exposure of CSBA experts
  • Draft press releases
  • Provide media training to CSBA staff
  • Assist in formulating media interaction policy for CSBA staff
  • Issue internal media advisories
  • Pitch CSBA op-eds and TV/radio/print interviews
  • Organize and attend editorial board meetings with CSBA principals
  • Create, maintain, and grow press lists for promotion and distribution of CSBA products and events
  • Monitor and maintain database of media coverage of CSBA and staff
  • Ensure accurate representation of CSBA’s work, positions and statements in the media; correct errors and misquotations
  • Maintain contacts database which allows for precise targeting of CSBA audience segments for outreach purposes
  • Monitor media, foundation, industry, and government trends with related ongoing analyses of trends impacting CSBA. Develop and communicate actionable strategic and tactics.

 

Website

  • Maintain CSBA website; monitor and coordinate upgrades, fixes, design updates, and content
  • Work with representatives of traditional and new media outlets to link mentions of CSBA experts and products to the CSBA website in order to increase traffic

 

Development

  • Collaborate with other senior CSBA staff in crafting effective development strategies for sponsorship development to support CSBA’s research program
  • Maintain CSBA’s list of prospective and existing sponsor points of contact

 

Required Skills

  • Able to achieve an in-depth understanding of CSBA, its research and its organizational strategy and objectives
  • Able to distill complex military-technical analyses for lay audiences
  • Highest caliber oral and written communications skills; excellent writer, editor and public speaker
  • S. citizen either holding or eligible for a government security clearance requiring a thorough background check
  • Able to develop and implement effective external relations strategies with measurable results
  • Team player who can forge and maintain strong relationships with CSBA colleagues

The third engineer noticed the robbers and raised the alarm resulting in the robbers escaping with stolen ship stores. VTIS informed. Singapore Coast Guard boarded the vessel for investigation.
