General position overview:

 

The Center for Biological Diversity seeks a dynamic, hard-charging and

creative leader for our groundbreaking Human Overpopulation Program. The

Overpopulation Campaign Organizer (Organizer) position is based in our

Tucson, Ariz., headquarters office and will be supervised by the

Communications Director. The Organizer will work closely with other

communications, conservation and development staff, as well as the

Center’s executive directors. This is an opportunity to expand the

environmental movement’s most innovative campaign to raise awareness

about the connection between human overpopulation and overconsumption

and species extinction, resource depletion and environmental

degradation. The Organizer must have excellent communication and

organizational skills, expertise and working knowledge of overpopulation

issues and politics, an ability to think strategically and manage short-

and long-term projects and have a self-starter personality and the

ability to work well independently and collaboratively. Passion and

experience with environmental issues and endangered species is desired.

 

Main duties:

 

– Tracking national and international communications and trends on human

overpopulation and the environment.

– Integrating overpopulation issues into other Center communications

work.

– Creating and implementing short- and long-range education and action

campaigns to connect overpopulation with endangered species impacts.

– Strategic planning and execution of the overpopulation campaign.

– Cultivating, managing and inspiring a growing number of overpopulation

activists eager to make a difference regarding this crucial issue.

– Overseeing our Endangered Species Condoms program, including

coordination of hundreds of volunteer distributors.

– Developing and implementing new initiatives to raise public awareness

about overpopulation.

– Writing and producing the Center’s monthly online overpopulation

newsletter Pop X.

– Managing the 7 Billion and Counting Facebook page and the program’s

Twitter account.

– Generating press releases, reports, Web materials and op-eds, as well

as working with the media.

– Finding opportunities to work with other like-minded organizations,

including environmental groups, to build grassroots support and effect

change on overpopulations.

Essential qualities, qualifications and skills:

– Minimum associate’s or bachelor’s degree.

– Two to four years’ work related to environmental activism, organizing

and/or communications.

– Exceptional written and verbal communications skills.

– Experience working with the media, giving interviews and writing press

releases.

– Proven project-management experience.

– A solid grasp of issues related to overpopulation, endangered species

and environmental effects, and knowledge of the current political and

cultural context related to overpopulation.

– Strong strategic-planning skills.

– Demonstrated ability to work both independently and with a team.

– Ability to balance multiple tasks and deadlines in a busy environment.

Salary is commensurate with experience and comparable to other

Position

 

The Communications and Marketing Coordinator will assist the Director of

Communications and Marketing in executing AAFA’s public relations

membership growth.  The Communications and Marketing Department’s goals

are achieved by engaging traditional media reporters and social media

influencers, communicating directly to AAFA’s membership through e-mail

marketing, the Web site, and social media channels.  On average, AAFA

releases 50 – 60 press releases on a variety of policy and industry

issues and achieves more than 500 media clips each year.

 

Areas of responsibility include:

 

•             Monitor media (traditional and social) for AAFA relevant news

•             Compile media clips report each morning

•             Distribute press releases and media advisories to media

•             Execute AAFA’s e-mail communications and marketing strategy, including

weekly membership newsletter, bi-monthly calendar of events, and

dedicated e-mails

The Position

 

The Strategic Communications Specialist reports directly to the Vice

President for Marketing and Communications and is responsible for

ongoing communication via the National Labor College online properties

and print materials, building brand awareness and assisting with

marketing initiatives.  This is a bargaining unit position in the

Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

•         Work as a key member and team player of the

marketing/communications team to write and produce engaging and

effective content.

•         Conceive and execute email marketing programs to increase

student enrollment, retention, and conversion rates.

•         Build brand awareness by managing content, look, feel, and

function of all NLC communications as well as helping to drive external

traffic to NLC.edu by keeping sites fresh and current.

•         Collaborate with other departments and partners to schedule,

track, and manage projects such as recruitment, registration, and

commencement.

•         Produce feature content for all media including student

testimonials, microsites, interactive, and other programmatic content.

•         Create a consistent editorial style for communications

components and ensure one voice across platforms.

•         Produce, or act as liaison with firms that produce, related

public relations materials, advertising, and marketing collateral.

•         Manage and evaluate effectiveness of electronic

communications, advertising, and electronic marketing initiatives.

•         Participate in daily maintenance of the NLC website and sites

such as Facebook by managing content updates, content management system

maintenance, and posting photographs, videos, documents, PDFs, and

graphic images.

•         Maintain integrity and quality of website, including content

and navigation, through ongoing review and maintenance, updating

out-of-date content, and purging/archiving of expired content.

•         Recommend and initiate use of new technologies and

improvements to site operations.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

•         Bachelor’s Degree and/or equivalent experience with strong

preference for the following:

•         Preferably at least 5-7 years of experience working on a

non-profit and/or higher education website.

•         Must be pro-active and self-starter.

•         Experience using common content management systems such as Red

Dot, Expression Engine, WordPress, Drupal, and Joomla.

•         Well-rounded, creative type with a talent for communicating

online and excellent writing skills.

•         Willingness to take on routine tasks as needed, team player,

and a positive attitude are necessary.

•         Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.

•         Flexibility with work schedule; this position requires

occasional evening and weekend work, and travel.

•         Ability to code HTML and CSS without a WYSIWYG editor

preferred.

•         Blogging experience and Photoshop skills are a plus.

•         Familiarity with the labor movement, higher education, and/or

online education is a bonus.

•         Experience working with diverse groups of stakeholders, being

calm under pressure.

23.05.2012: 2200 LT: Posn: 04:50N – 099:04E, Malacca Straits.

Armed pirates boarded a fishing vessel underway, took hostage six

crewmembers and hijacked the vessel. Upon receiving the information, the

MMEA immediately sent their patrol boat to the location and rescued the

vessel along with her crewmembers. All the crewmembers are safe. It was

reported that the pirates had left the vessel before the arrival of the

patrol boat.

 

04.06.2012: 0230 LT: Posn: 03:57.44N – 098:46.57E, Belawan Outer

Anchorage, Indonesia.

Seven robbers armed with long knives boarded an anchored bulk carrier at

forecastle. Duty A/B and D/O noticed the robbers and alarm raised. Upon

seeing the crew alertness, the robbers threatened the crew with long

knives and escaped empty handed in their waiting boat. Port control and

vessels in the vicinity informed.

 

01.06.2012: 0145 UTC: Posn: 06:19.34N – 003:29.41E, Lagos Anchorage,

Nigeria.

Three armed persons boarded the tanker from a wooden boat. Alarm raised

and all crew retreated into the citadel. After four hours the crew

emerged from the citadel and found that they had left. No damage and all

crew reported safe.

 

30.05.2012: 0320 LT: Port of Alger, Algeria.

Duty crew at aft mooring deck onboard a berthed bulk carrier noticed two

robbers trying to open the port life raft. He reported to D/O who raised

the alarm and crew mustered. Upon seeing the alert crew, the robbers

dropped the life raft into the water, jumped overboard and escaped empty

handed by jumping on the pier. Crew managed to recover the life raft and

brought it back onboard the ship in open position. Port control

informed.

 

25.05.2012: 0355 LT: El Dekheila Outer Anchorage, Egypt.

A fishing boat was seen drop anchor to the stern of a bulk carrier at

anchor. Duty A/B remained near the stern during his watch. Later the C/O

noticed two robbers armed with knives near the forecastle lowering ship

stores. Seeing the robbers with the knives the crew waited until the

robbers had departed before going forward to investigate. It was noticed

that teh hawse pipe cover was removed and the paint store padlock was

cut using a hacksaw blade.

 

17.05.2012: 1530 LT: Off Talicud Island, Philippines.

A tug towing a laden barge departed from Sasa port, Davao City at 1400

LT at slow speed heading to Thailand as port of destination. After 90

minutes of departure, the duty crew noticed 10 small boats surrounding

the barge and around 30 pirates boarded the barge, stole and transferred

the cargo to their waiting boats and escaped. Incident report to

Philippines police.

 

22.03.2012: 0003 LT: Posn: 22:15N – 091:44E, Around 3.9nm of Patenga

Point Light, Bangladesh.

Robbers armed with knives boarded an anchored tanker, stole ship stores

and escaped. The incident was reported to coast guard who immediately

despatched high speed boats which searched the waters and caught three

robbers and recovered the ship stores within 2.5h hours.

 

27.05.2012: 2355 LT: Posn: 02:17.0S – 079:54.1W, Contecon Guayaquil

Terminal, Ecuador.

Four robbers armed with knives boarded a berthed container ship during

formality inspection by the immigration and customs department. Duty

bosun noticed the robbers boarding the vessel from seaward side using

ropes and hooks. One of the robbers was proceeding aft towards the

accommodation. Bosun reported to Master and Chief Officer via the walkie

talkie and alarm raised. On seeing the alert crew the robber on deck ran

towards the bosun waving his knife. All the four robbers jumped

overboard and escaped with their three accomplices waiting in the boat.

Port authority informed and a coast guard boat was dispatched to search

the area.

 

24.05.2012: 0020 UTC: Posn: 04:02.9S – 039:38.7E, Berth No. 8, Mombasa

Port, Kenya.

A robber armed with knife boarded a chemical tanker at berth during

cargo operations. The robber attacked the duty officer on deck rounds,

injured him, stole his personal belongings and escaped. Master reported

to port police and agent who boarded the vessel for investigation.

 

23.05.2012: 1300 UTC: Posn: 12:45N – 043:18E, Bab El Mandeb Straits, Red

Sea.

Pirates in three skiffs approached a bulk carrier underway. Master

raised alarm, informed UKMTO and alerted the armed security team

onboard. Weapons sighted on the skiffs when they closed to 300 metres

from the ship. The armed security team fired warning shots resulting in

the pirates aborted the attempted attack and moved away.
