Overview

The Senior Director for United Nations Foundation Communications is responsible for developing and executing the national and international communications strategies for advancing the mission and goals of the UN Foundation as a whole.  S/He directs the Foundation’s flagship communications operation in support of Foundation-wide goals, with special responsibility for messaging, public outreach, branding, internal communications, and communications related to special initiatives and Foundation leadership.

The Senior Director will secure and maintain relationships with the press and UNF partners in order to promote the work undertaken by UNF and the UN to advance key global challenges. The Senior Director will also be tasked with creating official statements, news releases, web content, and talking points for representatives of the UNF and UNF partners when delivering the message of the UN and the UNF to a broader audience.  Additionally, the Senior Director will have primary responsibility for developing and maintaining the Foundation-wide editorial calendar of national and international opportunities to promote the work of the Foundation, its experts, senior leadership and board members.  The Senior Director will coordinate efforts with other Senior Directors and will collaborate with communications professionals within the Public Affairs Team.

S/He, as the main coordinator and implementer of communications projects that cut across the Foundation’s wide portfolio, will manage a small staff of communications associates and officers, will be responsible for liaison with any external consultants (including public relations firms working on pan-Foundation programs) and will be the coordinator for publication and curation of the public voice and products that support the pan-foundation communications goals of the organization.

Working Relationships

The Senior Director for Foundation Communications and Outreach is a member of UNF’s Public Affairs Team.   The Senior Director reports to the Executive Director of Communications and Public Affairs, in close coordination with the Vice-President of Communications and Public Relations.    Major Duties and Responsibilities

• Manage Foundation-wide communications plan in support of the Foundation’s mission, strengthening the Foundation brand, successfully crafting and building support for messages that position the Foundation as an organization that can effectively forge partnerships and build support to help the UN.

• Develop and implement strategy to communicate with specialty press, partner organizations and other target audiences about the UN Foundation and its experts and leaders.

• Develop relationships with reporters, editorial writers, columnists and broadcast media to advance promotion of the UN and the Foundation’s work focused on pressing global challenges—decreasing child mortality, improving disaster relief, protecting diverse cultures and environments, creating a clean energy future, empowering women and girls, and improving U.S.-UN relations.

• Develop and execute strategic communications and marketing plans (print, broadcast, periodicals, editorial boards, PSAs, videos, web, social media, and blog outreach) relevant to advancing UNF’s mission and brand.

• Work closely with the Foundation board liaison to promote our board members and the Foundation’s work. • Serve as main point of contact with media around Foundation issues; identify, cultivate and deepen relationships with journalists and media outlets in support of Foundation goals.

• Develop and implement strategy to secure high-level speaking engagements for Foundation leadership on panels at key national and international conferences to promote the Foundation as an important contributor in addressing worldwide challenges such as decreasing child mortality, improving disaster relief, protecting diverse cultures and environments, creating a clean energy future, empowering women and girls, and improving U.S.-UN relations.

• Develop and maintain strong relationships with communications counterparts at Foundation partner organizations and the United Nations to promote the Foundation’s ability to build partnerships, grow constituencies, mobilize resources and advocate policy changes to support the UN’s work for individual and global progress. • Provide guidance to Foundation senior leadership on effective internal communications strategies and tactics.

• Writing talking points, event briefings, and press releases.

• Help produce content and materials for the Foundation’s website.

• Support the overall efforts of the Public Affairs staff as directed.

• Manage consultant contracts. • Manage 3-4 full-time employees, as well as interns and fellows, as appropriate, in support of all the duties noted above.

Selection Criteria

• BS or BA required in communications, journalism, or a related field;

• 7-10 years experience in communications and outreach related to global development, policy, international relations or other cross-cutting issues;

• Demonstrated experience in the field of communication.  Familiarity with global development, UN issues and/or nonprofit expertise a plus;

• Ability to effectively manage a team, monitor productivity and collaborate among internal and external partner teams; • On-the-record media experience and management of relationships with journalists;

• Demonstrated working relationships with Washington, DC, national, and international media;

• Excellent editing and writing skills;

• Experience managing public relations consultants;

• Good organizational skills and ability to manage several projects simultaneously

• Ability to handle stress and work under pressure; • Ability to meet regular attendance / tardiness policy.

Benefits & Compensation

Salary commensurate with experience. Actual salary will depend on qualifications and anticipated contribution to the Foundation.   UNF pays 100% of medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance premiums for its employees and 75% of medical and vision for employees’ dependents.   In addition, UNF provides 20 days of paid vacation per year, 12 paid holidays, three personal days per year, an immediately vested 150% matching 403(b) contribution up to a limit of six-percent of employee pay, Metro Pass benefits, and flexible spending accounts for health and dependent care.
