*** From Rick Strutner, who got it from Greg Nordhougen:
In 1982, when my student battalion at the Navy Supply Corps School was experiencing our first encounter with the famed Navy “dream sheet” (Job v. Homeport v. Ship Type) and agonizing over the options, I remembered my OCS surface warfare shipmates' experience with the same thing. Of course, you wanted surface combatant, which fell into 2 categories after you crossed out the surface nukes: the new gas turbine platforms or the old steam plants. With Reagan's 600 ship Navy strategy, there were plenty of both plant types. As I recall, everyone wanted a Spruance as opposed to the old Adams- or Farragut-class, or a Perry rather than a Knox or Garcia-class frigate. At that time there was even one last Forrest Sherman on the active rolls.
I was lucky enough to get both a Perry and a Spruance, great platforms with berthing, dining, working, and, one of my considerations, supply storage spaces designed with the sailor in mind, air conditioned and spacious enough to provide good working and living environments. On the occasions when I and my shipmates visited steam platforms we were amazed at what we considered substandard conditions the crew and wardroom had to put up with.
In 2004, a year before I retired, I was on AT at NAVSEA HQ in the Washington Navy Yard. As part of the Navy Museum, the USS Barry (DD-933) is moored there and is used as a platform for ceremonies as well as a permanent exhibit for visitors. A Sherman-class destroyer commissioned in 1956, the Barry supported operations in Lebanon (1958), the Cuban blockade (1962), and earned two battle stars for service on the Vietnam gun line. I have to admit I got lost a couple of times on the self-guided tour. The placement of the living, and working spaces seemed to be sporadic. The mess decks and galley were small and cramped as were CIC, radio, and numerous other spaces. I would be surprised if the ship had A/C as well as adequate heating, and above the pilothouse, if I recall, was an open bridge. Of course, there is nothing like the smell of a warship – the combination of paint, machinery, stack gas residue etc. – and if you close your eyes, you are on every ship in the Navy.
What I realized on that visit is that the generation of officers a grade or two above me, and the career sailors I knew who had five or more years' service when I stepped aboard my first ship were the Navy of the 1960s and 1970s who served on the gunline of the Cold War in the last throes of the Soviet Union, in those beat-up tin cans, Shermans, Knoxes, Garcias, Adams, and others. You actually used Morse code and semaphore, typed Speedletters and everything else, filled out DD-1148s for supplies, shined your shoes, wore SDKs, real O-clubs, partied in Subic and Naples and other netherworlds, knew the art and science of gunnery at its best, divtacs, and unlike today's generation, were true mariners. So, I offer this humble BZ to you SWOs out there lest we forget!

the Army and USMC (USAIC DCD and MCCDC).
Daily work includes reviewing documents and consolidating tactics and
operational lessons, doctrine and requirements to develop a joint warfighter operational instruction guide. This “handbook” will instruct the soldier/Marine how to employ systems in an operational environment and the CONOPS and TTP's associated with various technologies emerging on the battlefield. The following skills are desired: Experience performing analysis, CONOPS or TTPs, relevant theater experience, technical writing, scout sniper/sniper related training or any combination thereof.

*** A young ensign had nearly completed his first overseas tour of sea duty when he was given an opportunity to display his ability at getting the ship under way.
With a stream of crisp commands, he had the decks buzzing with men and soon, the ship had left port and was streaming out of the channel. The ensign's efficiency has been remarkable. In fact, the deck was abuzz with talk that he had set a new record for getting a destroyer under way.
The ensign glowed at his accomplishment and was not all surprised when another seaman approached him with a message from the captain. He was, however, a bit surprised to find that it was a radio message, and he was even more surprised when he read, “My personal congratulations upon completing your underway preparation exercise according to the book and with amazing speed. In your haste, however, you have overlooked one of the unwritten rules – make sure the captain is aboard before getting under way.”
