The Free Job of the Week Newsletter

This is JOTW newsletter number 1,907

“If I wished to see a mountain or other scenery under the most favorable auspices, I would go to it in foul weather, so as to be there when it cleared up; we are then in the most suitable mood, and nature is most fresh and inspiring. There is no serenity so fair as that which is just established in a tearful eye.”

– Henry David Thoreau, The Maine Woods

This edition of JOTW comes to you from Dulles International Airport, Virginia.

***  Welcome to the JOTW network!

You are one of more than 5,970+ members in the JOTW subscriber network.

This is the award-winning free Job of the Week e-mail networking newsletter for professional communicators, dedicated to the positive unanticipated consequences of networking, or as we call it, “nedworking.”  JOTW is a cooperative service.  That means JOTW relies on the contributions of its members, like you.  We share job opportunities, news and information about the job market, as well as swapping stories about life’s peculiarities.  We connect you with others who are like you, and together we help each other.  What a concept.  Did I mention it’s free?

***  To submit a job for sharing on JOTW, please provide the job title, organization or company, and location and send it to Ned at lundquist989@cs.com.   Provide a link or contact info so people can check out your listing or follow up if interested.

***  Posting a job is free.    Recruiters can submit up to three jobs for free.  Each job listing may be posted once in the newsletter for free

I request that you do not send pdf files that I have to copy and reformat.  I prefer you provide your very brief job description in an email rather than an enclosure.  Please limit the size of your position descriptions (generally to 500 words or less).  “Can’t Wait” blast email priority listings are $300, and “Top Job” placement is $100.  Just send to me at lundquist989@cs.com.

***  This is a cooperative service.  It relies on your participation and contribution.  As you receive the benefit of this free newsletter, you should also send in jobs you learn about.  This is especially the case when there are job listings in the companies that you work for.

***  To sign up for JOTW’s new Google Groups list, send an email to Ned at lundquist989@cs.com and request to join the JOTW listserv.  If you received this as an email from neds-job-of-the-week@googlegroups.com, then you are on this list.

***  This week’s Can’t Wait postings:

None this week.

Can’t Wait jobs:  These jobs are forwarded to the entire list as soon as they are received, and do not wait for the Monday newsletter, and are posted prominently on the JOTW website.  Then they are posted first in the weekly JOTW newsletter.  Can’t Wait postings cost $300.  Contact Ned at lundquist989@cs.com.

***  This week’s Top Jobs:

None this week.

Top Jobs:  Stand above the rest.  Your job can be right here, at the top of the weekly JOTW newsletter.  Top job placement costs $100 per job per week.  To be on top, contact Ned at lundquist989@cs.com.

***  If you find out about a job opportunity in communications, send it to me (lundquist989@cs.com),   and I’ll share it with the JOTW network.

***  From Fernando Gonzalez:

Hi,

My name is Fernando Gonzalez and I’m the HR Manager at the Trust for Public Land.

We’d like to post our ‘Director of Philanthropy – Conservation Finance and The TPL Action Fund’ on your site.

Below is the information.  Please let me know if you need anything else to post the job.  Thank you.

Fernando Gonzalez

18.)  Director of Philanthropy – Conservation Finance and The TPL Action Fund, Trust for Public Land (TPL), Washington, District of Columbia / Flexible

TPL and its affiliated 501(c)(4) campaign organization, The Trust for Public Land Action Fund (TPLAF), have helped states and local governments generate over $100 billion in new public funds for parks and conservation. For 25 years, TPL’s best-in-class Conservation Finance program has worked to create new state and local public funding for parks and conservation, providing technical assistance to over 600 successful ballot measure campaigns and scores of legislative campaigns. TPL has for decades also been at the forefront of federal funding for parks and conservation and has recently established the 10-Minute Walk Campaign, which works with Mayors to bring a quality park within a 10-Minute Walk of everyone in America’s cities.

When it comes to parks and land conservation, we strongly believe there are no “red” voters or “blue” voters – only green voters. The opportunities to make important advances in park equity and climate funding and policy at the national, state, and local levels have never been greater.  In response, the TPL and TPLAF are placing greater than ever emphasis on advocacy. TPLAF has worked along with TPL, focusing on political action for equitable park and climate conservation funding through state and local ballot measures, legislative campaigns, and congressional action for federal funding. TPLAF provides the lobbying dollars the fuel our advocacy and this position is central to that effort.

Position Summary:

The Director of Philanthropy for Conservation Finance and the TPLAF is a key member of the Philanthropy and Policy, Advocacy, and Government Relations (PAGR) teams, and oversees all fundraising activities for Conservation Finance and TPLAF. The Director of Philanthropy carries a diverse portfolio of individual major gift prospects, with an emphasis on bolstering the organization’s mission through tax deductible and non-tax deductible 501(c)(4) donations. In addition, the Director of Philanthropy helps recruit and manage the TPLAF Board of Directors, and directs their fundraising efforts. The Director of Philanthropy works closely with the SVP for Policy, Advocacy, and Government Relations, the VP for Conservation Finance, and the Sr. Director Federal Relations, and reports to the Associate Vice President for Institutional Giving within the Philanthropy Department.  Ideally, this position will be based in Washington, DC but, we are open to other locations throughout the United States.

Responsibilities:

  • 50% Relationship Manager:  Establish and manage a portfolio of individual donors and prospects with an emphasis on major gift capacity and giving potential. This includes: identifying new donors and conducting appropriate donor research with support from the Prospect Development team; maintaining a schedule of action touch points that follow the Moves Management strategy to move individuals along the donor continuum; engaging in industry best-practices (i.e., creating written solicitation strategies, documenting moves and information through the efficient use of the philanthropy database, initiating and participating in prospect reviews, and documenting pertinent information with colleagues); ensuring collaboration and close coordination with larger Philanthropy and PAGR teams; and fostering and maintaining productive relationships with staff across the organization. Implement an annual fundraising plan to achieve revenue target of $3 million within a three-year period from date of hire.

  • 25% Content Development. Working with colleagues from Philanthropy, PAGR, and Marketing, articulate the key opportunities to leverage public funding with private support through the establishment of public policies, state and local ballot and legislative measures, and movements that shape Conservation Finance’s and TPLAF’s organizational growth and impact. Develop compelling, inspiring cases for support that underscore the importance of measures designed to raise new public funds for climate, equity, parks, and land. Effectively convey to new audiences why conservation and park funding campaigns and advocacy are effective strategies for nonpartisan political giving and the powerful leverage they hold. Serve as PAGR Philanthropy liaison to the larger Philanthropy team.

  • 15% Program Oversight:  Oversee and be accountable for all PAGR and TPLAF fundraising activities, including design and implementation of annual and long-range work plans, development and realization of annual revenue goals, and priority setting.  Work with AVP for Institutional Giving, SVP for PAGR, the VP for Conservation Finance, and the Sr. Director Federal Relations to identify fund raising needs in order to integrate and direct fundraising efforts. Track and report progress toward revenue and programmatic goals.  Monitor philanthropy associated expenses ensuring proper investment of resources. Oversee donor communications and recognition, coordinating with regional and national Philanthropy and Marketing staff.  Collaborate with Philanthropy Programs regarding donor events and on-the-ground engagement. Direct and coordinate the involvement of TPL staff with donors and in overall fundraising.

  • 10% TPLAF Board Coordination:  Work with SVP for PAGR and TPLAF Board Chair to sustain and grow TPLAF Board of Directors, including identifying and recruiting new members, directing the fundraising knowledge and efforts of the Board, overseeing the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual Board members, and ensuring Board giving metrics are achieved. Coordinate all volunteer activity with Philanthropy’s Volunteer Manager.  Oversee TPLAF Board meetings, including scheduling and agenda setting.

Qualifications:

  • Passionate about The Trust for Public Land’s and TPLAF’s mission.
  • Ability to inspire donors and to communicate how their giving makes a difference.
  • Minimum six years of fundraising experience, including making major gift solicitations.
  • Proven track record of closing gifts of $25,000+.
  • Political/campaign fundraising experience a requirement.
  • Interest in politics, campaigns, and advocacy.
  • Keen fundraising strategist who can engage new and potential donors and foster relationships with key program colleagues.
  • Knowledge of philanthropy best practices including documenting donor interactions and prospect tracking in a donor database.
  • Ability to achieve Philanthropy metrics and meet or exceed fundraising goals.
  • Experience recruiting and managing volunteer boards, as well as working with volunteers to fundraise successfully.
  • Collaborative, able to function as a member of a national, geographically distributed team, participate in activities that will benefit other members of the team, and contribute to the accomplishment of team objectives.
  • Self-motivated; able to multi-task with excellent attention to detail and deadlines; can perform successfully without regular supervision.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Computer proficiency with various Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Good sense of humor.
  • Willingness to travel up to 20%.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required.

The Trust for Public Land is committed to cultivating a diverse staff that is representative of the communities we serve.  Applications from individuals having diverse backgrounds and life experiences are strongly encouraged.  We are open to the possibility that a great candidate for this job may not precisely meet all of the above criteria; if you believe you’re the right person for this job and can persuasively make that case, we encourage you to apply.
