*** 2013 IABC Gold Quill Awards Blue Ribbon Panel Judges
Judging for the Gold Quills has begun and one of the Blue Ribbon Panel of Judges recently met over a weekend in San Francisco. Other Blue Ribbon Panels have or are meeting at various locations around the globe. “This is the first year we’ve judged the awards this way, and the online submission process that replaced the hard copy submissions has helped the judges provide more definitive feedback,” says Tim Buckley who is chairing GQ this year. “A big thank you goes out to all of the IABC members who have or are volunteering their time to be a judge this year. Winners will be announced in May. “
*** Ned Lundquist, ABC, talks to Tim Buckley, chair of the Gold Quuill Awards program for 2013:
Ned: What’s new with Gold Quill judging this year?
Tim: So much, Ned. For a start the entire program has gone on-line which has allowed us to give everyone more time to complete their entries. There were more categories than ever before, giving greater choice for entrants and we extended the allowable timeframe for entrants’ work – this meant that projects didn’t have to start and finish in just one year.
We have also done a whole lot of work around the evaluation of the program. For the first time all evaluators are being trained on how to be more consistent in applying the Gold Quill’s unique seven point scale. In addition, entrants will find much more feedback on their work as the evaluators have to comment on all sections of the work plan and the work sample.
Finally, every entry is being evaluated at a Blue Ribbon Panel. Historically, a round of first tier evaluation would eliminate some entries from the program before a single Blue Ribbon Panel looked at the crème de la crème in San Francisco. This year we are having five panels across the world – San Francisco, Toronto, Melbourne, Pretoria and London.
The first one, in San Francisco, was held last week and was a tremendous success. Toronto and Melbourne are the weekend after Easter, with Pretoria and London following in the two weeks after that.
Ned: I enjoyed participating in the Blue Ribbon Panel in San Francisco. I found some of the entries that my fellow evaluator and I judged to be exceptional, and others were lacking purpose and direction. What kind of o0verall feedback have you received from the evaluators so far, and what can communicators do to make sure their work can be judged as a winner in next year’s competition?
Tim: Feedback I have had from the evaluators is three-fold really:
First, they enjoyed the San Francisco panel for the opportunity to meet, and network with, like-minded senior communicators.
Second, they found the evaluator training very useful in gaining a more common, and consistent, understanding of how to apply the seven-point scale.
Third, they, like you, were inspired by some of the exceptional work and hope the feedback they gave on the entries that could have been improved will help the entrants develop as communicators.
All the secrets to winning a Gold Quill are on the website gq.iabc.com study those and you will not only have the path to Gold Quill success, but you will also have the blueprint to creating amazing communication pogrammes – that make a difference.
Ned: Speaking from experience, I can say that the strongest entries had measurable objectives and results tied to those objectives. Do you think all award-winning communication efforts should meet that standard?
Tim: I certainly think they should aspire to meet that standard. There are times in a professional communicators career when it’s possible to set out a programme exactly along those lines, there are other times when circumstances dictate differently. However as long as you keep the standard as your foundation you’re not going to go far wrong.
