Sometimes You Must Not Stand Out

After spending considerable time providing you weekly advice at this website about how to stand out from your professional competitors, I’m going to switch things up a little and focus on when you must not stand out.

I came across some very clever and smile-provoking advice this week that I just had to pass along to you here today: The subject is the many ways to get fired.

Right now, you’re probably asking yourself: Why would Woody share ways to get fired? The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind. And, also the answer is right here in this link to some timely and wise advice that has been given the catchy David Letterman type title of “Top 10 Ways to Get Fired”.

A famous Paul Simon song is “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” and I’m sure that there are at least 50 ways for you to get fired, too. Let me add a couple of my own suggested ways as we make progress towards reaching the list of the big five-oh ways:

**Being a Complainer — It takes talent to master the art of becoming that cherished employee in every work environment who has developed excellent skills at finding something wrong to mention even when everything is going just right. This kind of person usually makes enemies easily, both at work at away from work. It won’t be very long before this kind of person gets quickly ushered out of the building. At last, they will have something genuine to complain about.

**Being Too Blunt — We all have encountered people at work who don’t have emotional intelligence. Even if they never heard of emotional intelligence, they clearly do not have it. These people are the kind that answer the question, “Does this dress make me look fat?” with a simple “Yes!” answer. They usually end up eating by themselves since few employees will want to put up with someone who doesn’t have any filters.

Share your comments and suggestions on the subject of the many ways to get fired so that we can reach 50. I look forward to hearing from you today!
