*** Battle of Midway:
This year marks the 65th Anniversary of the Battle of Midway. On June
4th 1942, a vastly outnumbered and outgunned U.S. Fleet defeated the
finest of the Imperial Japanese Navy in the waters off a small Pacific
Atoll named Midway. Their daring combination of intelligence, tactics,
courage and sacrifice forever changed the course of the war and world
history.
In 1999 then Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jay L. Johnson announced
that beginning with the 2000 observance, June 4 would become as
significant as Oct. 13 — the Navy's birthday. “Twice a year, we will
pause as a Navy to reflect upon our proud heritage and to build in all
hands a renewed awareness of our tradition and history,” Johnson said.
For the past several years the Battle of Midway has been commemorated in June in Washington DC. This year the Battle of Midway Commemoration is being sponsored by a number of Associations and Foundations including Association of Naval Aviation, Naval Historical Foundation, Naval Order of the United States, The Navy League of the United States, The United States Navy Memorial Foundation, Naval Helicopter Association, United States Naval Institute, Surface Navy Association, and the Tailhook Association.
Two events are being planned to commemorate the Battle of Midway. The Naval District of Washington will host a wreath laying ceremony at 1100 on Monday, 4 June at the Navy Memorial on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC. You are encouraged to visit the NDW Special Events

The second is a dinner to be held on Sunday, 3 June at the Army Navy
Country Club in Arlington, Virginia.
No special arrangements are required to attend the Navy Memorial
Ceremony, but advance reservations are required to attend the dinner.

Commemoration Dinner. Mr. Thomas Wildenburg, award winning author will be the principal speaker.
The pre-dinner reception will commence at 1830 followed by dinner at
1930. The cost to attend is $55 per person. Additional details can be

The Office of Marine Operations is seeking a Chief Marine Navigation Dept in support the operation of 235ft oceanographic research vessel MARCUS G. LANGSETH. The ship is a general purpose oceanographic research vessel with specialized capabilities for geology and geophysics which include 2D and 3D multi channel seismic research.
Supervises Marine Navigation team personnel and provides highly skilled technical support to scientists including the preparation, deployment, testing, operation and repair of electronic and mechanical equipment used to acquire marine scientific research, particularly, multi-channel seismic data. Performs work at the Observatory when required and for expeditions at sea. On board a vessel, this person supervises the navigation team which provides real time positioning of the ship and calculates final coordinates of the seismic source, the streamers and all general purpose oceanographic equipment. Monitors and records high quality data within the preplanned required specifications.
The selected individual is expected to foster a culture promoting health, safety and environmental issues. Minimum requirements for the position include:
Minimum of BS or Engineering degree plus three years experience in navigation department on research or exploration vessels or High School Diploma plus nine years experience on research or exploration vessels in seismic navigation or a combination of equivalent related field experience. Individual must be capable of working on ship at sea and in isolated locations for a continuous period of time, up to 3 months. Individual must be eligible to hold US Passport or to obtain a US Visa.

and assignments is key. The ability to multitask across projects is also essential. A positive “get the job done” attitude will be rewarded. The ability to jump in and get to work with little direction and supervision will be of significant benefit.

knowledge, skills, and experience:
A working knowledge of Kalman/Adaptive filtering, Stochastic models,
